Synthesis of novel nickel(II) complexes bearing substituted phenyl isocyanides and their catalytic activity toward ethylene polymerization.

Novel nickel(II) complexes with 2-substituted or 2,6-substituted aryl isocyanide ligands were synthesized and subjected to studies on ethylene polymerization. As shown in the table, the catalytic activity and molecular weight of the obtained polyethylene depends on the substituents of the aryl group.

Monometallic and heterobimetallic azanickellacycles as ethylene polymerization catalysts.

[MX2=ZnBr2(2a), CoBr2(2b), FeBr2(2c)]

Azanickellacyclopentene complexes produced by trimerization of isocyanide on the nickel atom are new ethylene polymerization catalysts. Incorporating a second metal to the diimino moiety of the two metals, which forms the heterobimetallic complexes, increases the catalytic activity.
